Felix: Begin the decline

It is that time of year again; it isn’t just holiday time and thinking about how so much better life would be if you just stayed on holiday for ever, and what is the point about coming back and getting your nose back to the grindstone… and all those sorts of things. No, for some of us it is all a bit more basic than that: it is about getting your nose on to the grindstone in the first place.

There are, once again – after a period of hiatus – two categories of candidate: the very old; and the very young. For the very old, we have a resumption of the whole sweat of getting silk. And for the very young, it is all about getting taking on at the end of pupillage. The very junior are anxious to be featuring in one of those adverts that appear in the legal press (and sometimes the Times if you are at a very posh set of Chambers) that refer to Chambers’ “delight” at the successful completion of your pupillage.
