This is a weighty tome, although not quite as heavy (nor as expensive) as its main contenders, The Red Book or Hershman & McFarlane. It is intended to be of use to the busy practitioner and the judiciary, and I found that it did overall fulfil that intention, leaving aside the quibbles that I will refer to later. This is a confident book and one which was enticing enough to read the narrative rather than just flicking through for those chapters that you are familiar with.

The book is divided into four parts: practice, evidence and procedure, private law, public law and a public law case digest. These parts contain individual chapters on all the main areas that you would need for preparing your family cases.

In each chapter, after the narrative, the relevant practice directions, statutes and case law etc. which have been referred to in the narrative are set out. This is an ideal way of referencin...
