NLIS: the way forward

Naomi Fulwood reports on the
benefits of going online for land and property searches

Since its launch in February 2001, the Government-stamped Nat-ional Land Information Service (NLIS) has been working hard to meet its promise to speed-up the delivery of land and property searches to solicitors. Almost 2000 firms are already online, with over 300,000 searches having been made already. So why are some solicitors still holding back? Solicitor and director of Practical Solutions, Allan Carton, gives one explanation: “Having worked extensively with conveyancing professionals from firms of all sizes on projects and training courses, it’s clear that most have been so tied up in their day-to-day work that they’ve been unaware of a lot of the discussion and developments that have been going on during the past few years. This is understandable, but frightening, because the changes to come are so radical that the way conveyancers work is likely to be transformed by 2007, which is just five years away.” So, what are these discussions and developments?
