Remuneration certificates abolished

18 August 2009

Remuneration certificates were abolished last week, with the introduction of the Solicitors’ (Non-Contentious Business) Remuneration Order 2009 on 11 August.

The order implements provisions in the Legal Services Act, amending section 56 of the Solicitors Act 1974. Clients have until now been able to request a certificate where there is a disputed bill.

Meanwhile the SRA is introducing an emergency rule to the Solicitors Code of Conduct 2007 to preserve clients’ rights to information. Solicitors may need to update billing procedures to take account of the changes. See www.lawsociety.org.uk for a detailed practice note.
