Alexander 'Sandy' Thomas has been elected by his partners to serve as global managing partner of Reed Smith.

Formerly chair of the international firm's litigation department, he commences his three-year term on 1 August 2014.

Thomas was first selected by the executive committee for the role of global managing partner in October 2013, when former global managing partner Gregory Jordan left the firm to become executive vice president and general counsel of PNC Financial Services Group.

"I am deeply honoured to be elected by my partners," said Thomas. "This election fostered an exchange of ideas that was tremendously valuable to our firm."

Based in the firm's Washington DC office, Thomas is the 11th managing partner of the firm in its 137-year history.
