Stephen Minns has been appointed chair of the Australian board of King & Wood Mallesons.

He replaces Tim Bednall, who served as chair for three years and oversaw the combination of Australian law firm Mallesons with PRC law firm King & Wood in March 2012.

Australia managing partner Tony O’Malley said: “The past year has been an extraordinary one for the firm.

“The combination to create a powerhouse legal brand in the Asian region coupled with a challenging economic environment has meant that we’ve had to adopt new ways of thinking and more meaningful ways of engaging with clients.

“Tim has been at the centre of this drive and... Stephen’s appointment will bring a seasoned insight into our business.”

Minns joined Mallesons in 1986 from investment banking at Morgan Grenfell in Sydney and London. As well as his role as chair, he plans to continue to run his practice in public company acquisitions and equity issues, as well as general corporate work.

O’Malley remains at the firm as partner and returns to his M&A, corporate advisory and competition law practice.
