Ray Berg has been elected UK managing partner of international law firm Osborne Clarke, effective 1 January 2015.

The M&A lawyer will succeed Simon Beswick, who has held the position for 12 years. Beswick will however continue as global CEO, a role he took up in 2012.

Senior partner Andrew Saul said Berg is "a warm and inclusive character, but he balances that with an ability to cut through and deliver his strategy. It's a rare combination - but one that means the firm is in great hands for the next few years."

Berg, who joined Osborne Clarke as a partner in 2001, became head of its business transactions group In January 2013.

The firm said he has overseen a significant increase in the profitability of the practice group and has grown his UK team to over 100 lawyers.

Commenting on his election, Berg said: "I'm going to spend the next few weeks getting out and seeing as many of our clients as possible and listening to their views about how OC can best serve them."

Osborne Clarke has grown from six offices in 2011 to 18 in 2014 and hired more than 50 laterals in the past two years.

The firm says it will continue to grow as it delivers phase two of its internationalisation plans.
