Squire Sanders and Patton Boggs to create top-30 global law firm

Squire Sanders and Patton Boggs have today announced that they will merge to create a new top-30 global law firm.

The combined firm, which will operate under the name Squire Patton Boggs, is expected to be formed by 1 June 2014.

The new firm will rank among the 30 largest law firms in the world by revenues and lawyer headcount.

“The platform and collective expertise created through this combination provide considerable opportunities to access new markets, engage clients in new ways and attract and retain top talent,” said Ed Newberry, managing partner of Patton Boggs.

Added Jim Maiwurm, chair and global CEO of Squire Sanders: “This combination establishes us as the ‘go-to’ firm for public policy work. We also gain a leading position in the Middle East and several new locations in the United States, while deepening our bench in a number of important practices areas.”

Squire Sanders’ chair-elect, Mark Ruehlmann, will become chair and global CEO of Squire Patton Boggs on 1 January 2015, when Maiwurm’s term expires.

The combined firm will have 1,573 lawyers (of which 1,223 will come from Squire Sanders) and 45 offices in 21 countries around the world.
