Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co (SAM & Co) has won exclusive membership for India of Lex Mundi, a global network of independent law firms.

The Indian law firm was founded on 9 May 2015 following the dissolution of the nation's largest law firm, Amarchand Mangaldas, after nearly a century in business.

SAM & Co and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, headed by brothers Shardul and Cyril, were formed from the family-owned business, which was a member of the network.

Asked whether SAM & Co's Lex Mundi membership poses a competitive threat to his business, Cyril Shroff told Managing Partner: "Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has a very strong network of contacts and friendships with the best independent firms in every market. These relationships have been directly nurtured over time.

"From our own experience and other top independent firms the informal networks are significantly more powerful than formal networks. We see no impact on our practice by not being part of a formal network."

He continued: "A number of our friends are part of that network and work very closely with us on very significant transactions pursuant to direct bilateral relationships. We wish the Lex Mundi network all success."

The Lex Mundi board of directors voted unanimously to admit SAM & Co. as the exclusive member firm for India.

In a statement, Shardul Shroff said: "We truly cherish the relationships we have built as part of our legacy firm Amarchand Mangaldas with Lex Mundi law firms.

"As Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas looks forward to engage with clients to bring innovative thinking and business solutions to legal issues, our Lex Mundi membership will provide our clients access to the best legal minds in cities around the globe."

Both SAM & Co and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas are pushing forward with plans to expand across India and to strengthen their presence in each other's strongholds in Delhi and Mumbai, respectively.
