Duane Morris has entered into a joint law venture (JLV) with Oman law firm Al Mashaikhi and Partner.

The new firm, to be known as Dr. Said Al Mashaikhi and Partner Law Firm – A GCC representative office of Duane Morris, will give the US-based firm its first presence in the Gulf region.

The founding partner of the Omani firm, Dr. Said Al Mashaikhi, will become co-managing director of the joint venture.

Duane Morris partner Jeffrey Rodwell, who was formerly based in the firm’s London office, will serve as the other co-managing director.

The two firms have been in talks for more than a year.

Said Duane Morris’ chairman and CEO, John Soroko: “By formalising our relationship as a new joint venture with Dr. Al Mashaikhi’s firm, Duane Morris greatly expands not only its transactional capabilities in Oman, but also throughout the Gulf region.”

“Oman’s key location and role in international commerce, as well as an affluent population and a modern, open economy, create an abundance of business possibilities.”

The JLV intends to provide legal services across the Gulf region through Oman’s membership of the trade and economic alliance Gulf Cooperation Council. Duane Morris plans to coordinate its Omani involvement through its London office.

The JLV is expected to focus on project, equipment and asset-based finance; trade finance; real estate; private equity and other funds work; and Islamic finance.

Duane Morris previously formed an “enhanced JLV” with Selvam LLC in Singapore in 2010, followed by a strategic alliance with Mexico City firm Miranda & Estavillo in 2011.
