Blake Lapthorn and Morgan Cole have announced today that they will merge on 1 July 2014 to create a new firm called Blake Morgan.

The merger will push both firms up the UK top-100 rankings and create a top-50 law firm with annual turnover of £72m.

The majority of the new firm's turnover will come from Blake Lapthorn, which reported revenues of £45.6m in 2013, while Morgan Cole recorded £33.7m.

"We have been looking for the right partner to enable us to grow our business," said Elizabeth Carr, managing partner at Morgan Cole. "This move will provide greater opportunities for us to leverage our sector expertise… over a greater geographical area."

She continued: "We have an ambitious strategy to deliver the right capability in the most efficient and effective way. We are enthused by what the new firm can deliver in terms of investment in legal talent, training and technology."

Walter Cha, managing partner at Blake Lapthorn, said the combination "will provide us with a strong platform to invest in London and the Thames Valley".

Blake Morgan will have 120 partners operating from seven locations in the south of England and Wales, namely London, Cardiff, Reading, Southampton, Oxford, Portsmouth and Swansea.
