Top-100 UK law firm Bircham Dyson Bell (BDB) and London law firm Ambrose Appelbe have announced today their plans to merge.

The new £33m firm - of which £31m comes from BDB - will trade under the name Bircham Dyson Bell.

All members of Ambrose Appelbe will move to BDB's Westminster office when the merger completes on 1 April 2014.

BDB said the merger forms part of a wider strategy to develop all of the firm's key practice areas.

"We are delighted to be combining with Ambrose Appelbe, a firm with shared values and a diverse and complementary client base," said Jesper Christensen, managing partner at BDB.

"Our ambition is to grow by developing all areas of the firm and we will continue to look at a range of options to achieve this."

Added Lisa Bolgar Smith, managing partner at Ambrose Appelbe: "We have been looking for the right opportunity to enable us to grow our business. This merger is a great way for us to add to our considerable success and reputation and will enable us to add even more value for our clients."

Discussions have been ongoing for some time and both firms voted unanimously to merge on 13 February 2014.
