India's largest law firm, Amarchand Mangaldas, has today expanded its presence in the north of the country by launching a new office in Gurgaon.

More than half of the Fortune 500 have an official presence in the city.

The office launches with four partners - Amit Kumar, Ranjan Negi, Ravindra Bandhakavi and Saurav Kumar - along with "several" associates and lateral hires.

In an interview with Managing Partner, the firm's co-managing partner, Cyril Shroff, said "the way that we have constructed our model is to scale up and invest in creating a quality firm where we can stand up to international competition".

Co-managing partner Shardul Shroff said the focus of the new office "will be entirely on servicing the business, banking, and commercial community of Gurgaon, and penetrating into our untapped market in and around the rapidly demanding and upscale growth of the region".

The firm said the new office, which launches with a strong client base, "reflects the growing needs of the business community for quality legal services in their vicinity".

Amarchand Mangaldas currently has 705 lawyers, including 86 partners, across its eight offices. The firm's ambition is to have 1,000 lawyers by 2017, its 100th anniversary.

"We may surprise ourselves by crossing 800 lawyers this year," said Shardul Shroff.
