Dentons has announced today that it has launched its first office in Italy with 21 newly-recruited lawyers, including seven former DLA Piper partners.

The new Milan office is led by managing partner Federico Sutti, who was formerly DLA Piper's managing director for Europe and Africa.

"Italy is one of the key markets under our growth strategy for Europe," said Tomasz D?browski, Europe CEO at Dentons.

The team's arrival follows Dentons' merger with US law firm McKenna Long & Aldridge and its upcoming combination with ??, which is expected to create the largest law firm in the world by number of legal professionals.

"Italy ranks amongst the world's top 10 countries by GDP, and is the third largest economy in the Eurozone," said Dentons' global chairman Joe Andrew. "The launch of our Milan office marks another important milestone towards achieving our objective of becoming the world's leading law firm."

Global CEO Elliott Portnoy noted that the new Milan team supports the firm's "polycentric approach", through which the firm's lawyers are "deeply rooted in the communities in which they operate".

Earlier this year, Dentons announced that it had hired eight partners, along with 50 lawyers and other professionals, in Budapest.

Further growth in Europe is underway, according to Evan Lazar, chairman of Dentons' Europe board.

"We continue to make strategic and important growth moves across the Europe region, where we see a significant and growing amount of cross-border work," he said.
