Baker & McKenzie has announced today that it has appointed Jon McClay as its London director of marketing, communications and business development.

McClay joins the firm early next year from Freshfields, where he is currently global co-head of marketing and business development.

He takes over the position from Julia Hayhoe, who has been appointed the firm's global director of strategy implementation from 4 January 2016, working closely with the global chair and executive committee.

"Jon's wealth of experience and expertise across the entire marketing, business development and communications spectrum is second to none," said Baker & McKenzie's London managing partner, Paul Rawlinson.

"He's going to be a huge asset to the firm and I am confident that he will continue to drive our innovative client and business growth strategy, cementing our position as a top ten City law firm."

McClay joined Freshfields in 2011, where he has been responsible for global client development, sector-based strategies and global marketing campaigns.

Prior to that, he worked at Barclaycard for 20 years in commercial and customer-facing managerial roles.

At Baker & McKenzie, he will be focused on further developing the firm's brand and institutionalising client relationships.

In addition to his London responsibilities, McClay will work closely with the leadership team in Johannesburg to develop the marketing and business development capability of the South Africa office.

He will also serve on the eight-member London management committee, led by Rawlinson. Other members of the committee are: Mark Carter, chief finance officer; Gillian Coyle, HR director; Jonathan Westwell, general counsel; Helen Bradley, corporate partner; Monica Kurnatowska, employment partner; and Anthony Poulton, trusts disputes partner.
